Fines & Punishment
The court will impose fines and punishment on defendants convicted of a crime. Judges will typically hand down a sentence immediately for misdemeanors or noncriminal violations. Those convicted of more serious crimes will usually attend a sentencing hearing at a later time where the judge will determine the sentence.
Defendants guilty of misdemeanors or noncriminal violations will usually be required to pay a fine. Some crimes are punished with a combination of fines, community service and jail time. Convictions of more serious crimes and felonies usually result in fines plus incarceration in a state or federal prison. Fine amounts and prison terms vary by state, the defendant's record and the type of crime committed.
